Celebrate the summer: 7 x events
Yes! It’s finally summer! When the weather is as nice as it has been, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than outside, listening to the birds singing, taking in some sun and simply enjoying the beauty of nature. I also love going to the many (food) festivals and events on offer during the summer with my friends and family. In Amsterdam, there’s always something fun to do on the weekends, but the festivals held in other parts of the country are also most definitely worth a visit! I’ve summed up a list of the very best of these events, just for you. Let’s get this summer started!
1. Vegan Food Festival
The very first edition of the Vegan Food Festival will be held mid-August 2018, at the always-sunny Westergasfabriek in the Westerpark. With 30 food and non-food stands, there will be more than enough to taste and experience. This food festival, with its diverse program that includes music, workshops, fitness, documentaries and talks, is the ideal destination for anyone who loves tasty food and good vibes. Are you ready for a vegan flavor-explosion?
When: 10, 11 & 12 Augustus | Where: Gashouder (Westergasfabriek), Klönneplein 1, Amsterdam | Time: Friday 15:00 – 23:00, Saturday & Sunday 13:00 – 23:00 | Entrance: Free | Website: facebook.com/veganfoodfestival.
2. FeelGood Market
The FeelGood Market is a bustling event, rife with sustainable, handmade, original and inspiring (local) products, tasty (organic) bites, drinks, workshops and great live music. It’s also a great place to go with the kids with so many kid-friendly activities on the agenda. That way you can relax, too! ; ) See you there?
When: Every 3rd Sunday of the month | Where: Ketelhuisplein, Strijp-S, Eindhoven | Time: 12:00 – 18:00 | Entrance: Free | Website: www.feelgoodmarket.nl
3. De Parade
Looking for a festival that’s a bit different than everything else out there? De Parade is a true theater festival with about 80 theater, dance, mime and music productions for young and old. Sustainability is high on their list of priorities and you can even support ‘Join the Pipe’ (an organization that works to provide clean drinking water to all) while you’re there by making a voluntary donation when you use the bathroom. Can’t wait!
– 29 June to 8 July (Rotterdam)
– 13 July to 22 July (The Hague)
– 27 July to 12 August (Utrecht)
– 17 August to 2 September (Amsterdam)
Cost: 18 and up: €7,50 (tickets for shows are sold separately)
4. Funky Vegan Festival
I always love a festival where all the delicious (vegan!) food is made in fun and hip food trucks. You can try all sorts of small bites and at the end of the evening, you’ll have a full belly. I love it! You can also show off your dance moves to the live music on offer or swing past the info-booths to learn something new.
When: 14 July | Where: Moermanskade 71, Amsterdam | Time: 13:00 – 23:00 | Entrance: €8,56 | Website: www.veganevents.nl
5. Proef Eet
At Proef Eet, you can spend three days getting to know the culinary side of Enschede for only a few bucks a dish. The best part about this culinary festival is that the bulk of the proceeds go to the food bank! While you discover the different stands, you’ll also get to know the city center of Enschede, as the stands are spread out throughout it.
When: 31 August to 2 September | Where: city center of Enschede | Time: Friday 17.00 – 23.00, Saturday 13.00 – 23.00, Sunday 13.00 – 21.00 | Entrance: Free | Website: www.proefeet.nl
Oh, how I love dancing in the sun on a beautiful, warm, summer day! What’s even better is that you can do this in a sustainable way at one of the biggest festivals in the Netherlands. The food on offer at Mysteryland is organic, the energy used is mostly green and you can recycle your garbage. Festival-goers are also given the opportunity to plant a tree to compensate for the environmental costs of transportation via the ‘Trees for Traffic’ program.
When: 24 Augustus to 26 Augustus | Where: Paviljoenlaan 1, Haarlemmermeer | Entrance: Tickets for sale online | Website: www.mysteryland.nl
7. Rotterdamse Oogst Markt
When I walk around this market, I imagine that I’m in a little village in the south of France… Everything local, direct from the source, made with love and sold for a price that is fair for the producers: check, check and CHECK! And first and foremost, everything is fresh and super tasty. It’s a great place to stock up for a BBQ with friends. ; )
When: every Saturday | Where: Noordplein, Rotterdam | Time: 10.00 – 17.00 | Entrance: free | Website: www.rotterdamseoogst.nl
