When I was little, I used to hop and skip around more than usual in our backyard during the summer and at the beginning of autumn. The reason was that our elderberry bushes were filled with delicious elderberries – ready to be eaten – and just like all the little birdies, I loved them! Afterwards, I would come home with purple little hands and a colander filled with berries. We used them to make them into jam or syrup or we ate them as a snack. My parents planted the bushes for a reason; elderberries have a healing effect on your body. They contain of lots of potassium and vitamins A, B and C. They also have antiviral properties, which help your body to fight off infections.
Last week, my stomach ached and I felt like I was getting the flu (I think it’s going around!). I had actually forgotten all about elderberries, but when I called my mother for some advice, she recommended drinking a glass of elderberry juice on an empty stomach every day. It totally works! When you feel a little flushed and fluey, take some extra time to rest and drink a glass of elderberry juice every morning.
You can buy elderberry juice in any organic or health food store. I’ve become so inspired by the elderberry that I’ve started drinking the juice every morning.
This morning, I started my day with this shake.
