Happy February powaaafoodies! To me, February always feels like the month that just dangles between winter and spring. You can still enjoy guilty winter pleasures like hot chocolate and sweet potato mash, but at the same time, I tentatively start dreaming of spring and lazy afternoons in the park, the warm sun on my face and, of course, all the tasty smoothies and salads that I’ll make with all the seasonal fruit and veggies!
Whether we have the Elfstedentocht (an outdoor skating event known as the ‘Eleven Cities Tour’) to look forward to (if we do, I’ll be joining in!) or the mild, blue skies and sunny days we’ve seen this past week, February is the month to get things organized. In my last blog post, I told you about my resolutions, plans and goals for the coming year and I’ve already created quite a few recipes that I’ll be sharing with you soon. My new workspace is also starting to take shape. I love it! We’re moving things around, bringing things in, approving things and thinking over things. I’m pretty critical and I don’t let just anything end up in my kitchen, haha! The final result will be a beautiful place in which we’ll not only work hard, we’ll also be able to thoroughly enjoy ourselves. I’m sure of that!
To keep my energy level high between winter and summer, I like to work out more often in the early morning. There is nothing better than working up a real sweat and switching off my mind for a bit. When I get home, I mix up a powershake to start the day off right. It’s the best feeling!
Even if you’re not as into working out as I am, I still have a few tips for you that can help you get through the month with lots of energy:
- Root power!
Celeriac root is full of vitamins and minerals and you can even use the leaves to spice up your soups. I will share a tasty celeriac root recipe here soon!
- Get off the couch
Sure, spending an evening on the couch can’t hurt, but if you ‘force’ yourself out the door to go and do something fun, you’ll end up increasing your energy. You’ll see! Why not meet some friends for a game night (it sounds silly, but it’s so much fun!) or a potluck dinner party where everyone brings a dish… Or spend an evening picking through your best friend’s clothing closet. Whatever you end up doing, it doesn’t really matter as long as you’re doing something and having fun ; -)
- My name is bread, banana bread
Bananas are also little nutrition bombs! Of course you can just peel and eat a banana like usual or throw it in a smoothie, but what’s really great is making my banana bread. It (almost) always turns out fantastic and it’s so tasty it’s to die for. And don’t forget: bananas give you a boost!
In Australia, where I just was for a totally awesome and inspiring trip, it’s summertime and it’s bursting with amazing food festivals, both small and large. At the end of this month in Melbourne they’ll be holding the ‘Longest Lunch in the World’ – the previous record was reached with a 530-meter-long series of lined-up tables! It might be a good idea for me to try something like this in the spring in the Netherlands… 531 meters of healthy food and everyone is welcome to join. Dreaming big! But first, it’s time to finish my new kitchen.
I like February. With everything that’s behind me and everything that lies ahead, I can’t wait!
