It’s a wrap! The photoshoots for my book are finished! After all this intensity and rushing around, I’m really longing for a week filled with inspirational and new (food) ideas. While I’m writing this, I’m actually on the plane to… Barcelona. Si! I could really use a little boost, ‘cause I’m so so so tired. It’s starting to show now too and my eating habits have been shaken up a little bit. I have constant cravings for sweets and snacks. Why is that?
It’s actually quite a technical little story. When you’re tired, you haven’t had enough sleep (duh…). When you don’t sleep a sufficient number of hours, your endocrine system becomes confused. The hormones that control your appetite are called ‘ghrelin’ and ‘leptin’ and your sleep influences how they work. Ghrelin ensures that you feel hungry and leptin causes this feeling to stop after you’ve eaten. People who are sleep deprived have higher levels of ghrelin than leptin in their blood, which makes them feel hungry in the morning and throughout the day, as the body wants to be fed constantly at this point.
So yep, that’s it. I know what I have to do this week in Barça. Sleep, sleep and sleep some more. Though I will, of course, abuse my unbalanced hormonal system a little bit more when I eat at some of those delicious and cute tapas places. It’s unavoidable. 😉
Next week, I’ll tell you all about the hotspots, juice bars and tapas restaurants I’ve found during my week in Barcelona. Adiós!
