People often ask me about current trends. To be honest, I don’t really pay attention to trends. Lots of people assume that I do because I started blogging about Powerfood on renskroes.com (and elsewhere) about three years ago. But it was really just a matter of good timing! ; ) Still, I have noticed that I do get inspired by what I see on Instagram and Pinterest, for example, and the more I see things that pique my interest, the more I want to take on the challenge of making my own healthy version of a dish or recipe.
This was the case with the matcha latte. I’d been drinking them for a while now, but as I started seeing them everywhere, I also started drinking them more often. The trend inspired me! This green beverage gives you a mega energy boost and, in my opinion, is an ideal substitute for coffee. Matcha is a Japanese green tea that has been ground into a powder. It has a cleansing effect on your gut and contains magnesium. But what I really love about it is that, unlike coffee, the energy boost it provides isn’t immediately followed by a crash – in my case, the energy boost lasts for quite a while.
Once in a while, I pick up a matcha latte from my favorite coffee place ‘Trakteren’, just around the corner from me. They make delicious matchas with beautiful latte art: from bears and hearts to angels. When I’m at home or at work, I make my own using a bamboo whisk (available at most tea shops). You can also just use a little ‘regular’ whisk or, if you’re like me and are always looking for the easiest way to get things done, you can use a blender.
